Drive if you must but Singapore is one of the few countries that imposes a mandatory COE which is essentially a 10 year car lease except that your vehicle costs 3 x more than it would in other countries such as the US. Owning a car is a complete luxury. Even though Singaporean car owners may own their cars for a shorter period (average trade-in is 5 years), it is still in the owner’s interest to keep the car in tip top condition as repair costs can be frightening. The article below from Green Planet gives you useful car tips on how to maintain your car from window wipers to the engine.

7 Ways to Make Your Whole Vehicle Last Longer, From Wheels to Wipers

Did you know that many insurance companies figure most vehicles on the road have only 10 years of useful life before being carted off to the junkyard? While there may indeed be older vehicles that should be crushed due to their poor emissions and economy, there are others that will remain quite efficient modes of transportation. In fact, the folks at Environmental Transport Association (ETA) say that keeping your older (less efficient) vehicle, is actually greener than purchasing a newer and cleaner vehicle in many cases.

By following a proper preventative maintenance schedule, you can easily double your car’s useful life, while spending less at the gas pump and at the repair shop. Beyond regular maintenance to increase your vehicle’s overall longevity, you should also ensure the longevity of your vehicle’s individual parts. This can dramatically decrease the amount of waste your vehicle contributes over a year. This includes the oil, tires, brake pads, etc. There are many ways to help minimize the natural wear and tear of your vehicle’s various parts, and these are my top 7:

1. Extend Life of Windshield Wipers

Windshield wipers are just one of those things that get old and needs replacement. You wouldn’t want to be in the middle of a bad storm when your wipers fail. However, instead of replacing them every few months, you could just as easily extend their life, while allowing them to work at their peak efficiently. The rubber portion on your wipers will always work best when clean, so it is a good idea to wipe them with denatured alcohol (91%) once a month. You can also use fine sandpaper (1000 to 2000 grit) to do the job. This will keep them flexible and better able to hold to the glass and wipe water and the debris away.

It is very well to use Singapore as a good example…. but …. Singapore has a premium public transport system, so I do not have to own a car and owning a car is a considerable luxury.

In Uk and many parts of the US, reliable clean and effective public transport is virtually nil!

It is fantastic step to promote green earth concept. To bring awareness to even those called the luxury class, who may care for money, this is worth the effort even with car keeping, the double benefit of green earth and efficient car keeping.

I live in Hong Kong which has an excellent and cheap public transport system with the convinience of the Octopus card which you swipe for Journeys

The question is , “why do people have cars in Hong Kong ?”
Are they showing off , is its a Status Symbol ?

Its time like in Singapore that cars are forced off the road ! this being done for enviromental reasons and to help the people of Hong Kong breathe .
The air in HK is filthy and the Government is doing nothing about it !

What about Hybrid? I heard they produce very little CO2s??? Is that true? I was reading up about some cars that can be charged through electricity and they produce zero CO2s.

But it could be pretty difficult to have that kinda charging thing going on in Singapore. How to charge? Where to charge? Do we have time to charge? Most of the people who bought cars that could charge leave in semi D’s or landed property – so called in other countries as they can have their own space to charge. In singapore, for say we pay 1m bucks SGD for a condo, we wouldnt even have the space to charge our own car, as it is still a small apartment with swimming and gym facilities- thats about all. Oh well.

If there is really a need for cars, I suggest get normal cars like honda and toyota. They are fuel efficient. Tested and proven. BMW , MERCs and all are expensive cars which consume tons of fuel. If there is no need for business purposes, but for personal uses, buy a car that’s fuel efficient =)

    Thanks for reading.

    Hi Daryl,
Indeed that hybrid produce less CO2 as it consumes less fuel by minimum 30% with certain condition like driving habit,etc..

Conventional Hybrid doesnt need charging station unless it is a plug-in hybrid. It runs on Engine and Battery as energy sources that is why it produces less CO2.

For Plug-in hybrid and full electric, they need charging station and this is still a question on how to go about it in Singapore. We’ll see.

The cars were properly arranged in that photo, Man! I mean, all of those are attractive in a way. They don’t look too general for me. The car designers who made these really do have a creative imagination, and I admire them so much! I wish I was also gifted with that kind of talent, though.
