A Better Way to Clean Your Delicates

There is a socially-responsible way to clean your delicate garments, and it is definitely not by dry cleaning them.

Truth be told, dry cleaning involves the use of perchloroethylene (perc), a solvent said by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) to be a potential carcinogen and is categorised as a hazardous air pollutant. In addition, the by-product of dry cleaning includes cooked muck and sludge, which must be handled as hazardous waste so as to avoid the contamination of drinking water.

In other words, perc places not just its handlers at risk, but also your wellbeing as well as the environment.

Instead, why not try wet cleaning?

Using biodegradable soaps, the process of wet cleaning requires less water and energy as it is much smaller than dry cleaning machines, making it environmentally-gentle and a more ecological option. Moreover, it is safe for most delicate fabrics, and lifts water-soluble stains like sweat, urine, blood, wine and coffee, unlike dry cleaning, which is better at removing oil-based stains.

For all your wet cleaning needs, do visit Green N Clean Laundry, Singapore’s only 100% wet cleaning laundry shop. In operation since November 2007, the company is moving out of their Telok Blangah premises, to a location that will soon be confirmed. However, they will continue to manage a collection point in the area, on top of the existing points in Clementi and Pasir Ris.

I hate the smell of clothes that have been drycleaned. I am glad to hear there is an alternative. I hope wet cleaning comes to my area soon.
