“It’s a biologist’s dream — a rock band that’s named after plankton and makes conservation cool.” – Mike Shanahan, PhD in rainforest biology, press officer at IIED, blogs at Under the Banyan.
“Navicula is rockin in a new generation of Gaia’s children. Their musical message brings love for the Earth Mother home to Bali.” – Ibu Robin Lim, CNN Hero 2011
About the band
Navicula was formed in Bali in 1996 and have released 6 full-length studio albums. Many of their songs have a strong focus on social and environmental issues in Indonesia and around the world, which is why the media have coined them the “Green Grunge Gentlemen”.
Why Borneo (Kalimantan)
In 2011, Navicula recorded and released a song and music video titled “Orangutan”. The video was edited with shots of the band performing the song live and excerpts from “Green the Film”, an award winning documentary which highlights the main threat to Orangutan habitat, and shows heartbreaking footage of rainforest destruction.
Navicula’s track “orangutan” was released under a creative commons license and distributed free to NGO networks, universities, radios, and national TV stations. Since releasing the song, Navicula has received many requests to perform for their fans around the country, but the most important request so far is to tour Borneo (Kalimantan), home of the Orangutan, and to raise awareness about this issue at its source.
The video above is the second music video created for the song, which was released for the music competition Planetrox, organized by a music festival based out of Quebec, Canada. The video was chosen for the competition in an effort to further spread awareness about the Orangutan’s critical situation to the International community. Navicula has now been chosen as one of the top 10 semi-finalists from Indonesia and is in the online voting stage. If they win this competition, Navicula will perform at Envol et Macadam Festival in Quebec, Canada on Sept 7-8, 2012. You can help them win by voting for the video here. The winning band from Indonesia will be announced on July 8th. If Navicula is selected, the $1000 pledge to book Navicula for a live show (sound system not included) will be available for those of you based in Canada and nearby US states.
Why Navicula needs your support
Navicula needs your support to help cover airfare from Bali to Borneo for the band members, a sound engineer, their manager, and a videographer. During the Borneo tour, Navicula will be setting up live events for free at schools and with local communities. All expenses outside of transportation will be covered by the band, with support from local NGOs and fans in Kalimantan.
Help back Navicula’s Borneo tour and in return you will receive their limited edition Rainforest CD, band merchandise, and more. Look right to check out our full list of rewards.
What is the Rainforest CD?
The Rainforest CD will be a 500pcs limited edition compilation of Navicula songs about conservation, environmental degradation, and endangered species. During the Borneo tour, Navicula will distribute this Rainforest CD to local NGOs and conservationists to use as a resource for their campaigns, and as a tool to help raise awareness about deforestation.
The tracks are a mix of English and Bahasa Indonesia. During the duration of this project fundraising, we will be releasing updates introducing you to each track on the CD and the message behind the songs. Rainforest CD tracklist:
