It’s time to step on that bus, bicycle, an MRT train or even walk!
Make a pledge this Saturday Aug 22.
Make a difference in the environment by keeping the streets car free.
Have you ever thought of the impact of travel? For the 4th year running, Green Transport Week Singapore, which is organized by the Singapore Environmental Council, will highlight the beauty of public transportation in terms of its positive green influence, fuel conservation, and impact on reducing traffic.
You can catch the Green Kampong Team and its partners at the event which is located at the SMU Greens on Saturday, August 22 from 5 – 10pm. There will be many activities that day including a Music Concert, Video Pledge Contest, a Mass Cycling entourage, and several Green Kampong partners displaying cool green items and wares at our booth.
We’re giving away 5 Jurlique gifts sets worth $138 each to 5 lucky winners who email us (holman@greenkampong.com) their carbon footprint (http://www.climatechange.sg/) by Friday August 21, 12 noon. Winners will be announced at 7pm at the Green Kampong booth at the Green transport Week event.
It’s fun. It’s easy and of course, knowing is half the battle.
So drop by and say hi at our booth to chat about all things “green”.

ABOUT GTW 09
http://www.greentransportweek.sg/
The aim of Green Transport Week is to raise awareness of the impact travel has on the environment, to make people stop and think about the way they travel on every journey.
Green issues are high on the agenda for all countries as our reliance on cars contributes to damaging the natural environment. As we become more aware about the impact of transport on the environment, here is our chance to do something to prevent further damage to the planet. The SEC Green Transport Week is a chance for you to make a difference – both by trying to ‘travel green’ yourself, and by influencing your family, friends, co-workers, and employers to do the same.
COST OF CONVENIENCE
Driving a car is probably the most polluting act an average person can commit. It has been estimate that as much as 20-30% of all greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation.
The environmental impact of cars and other automobiles start even before they start running with highly-polluting manufacturing processes that consume vast amounts of energy. Once on the road, the average car can produce more than three kilos of air pollutants including carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, for every litre of petrol.
This is further compounded by the fact that even the best conventional car only operates at 30%-45% fuel efficiency. Up to 70% of each litre of petrol burning in the engine is wasted in the form of heat and overcoming internal component friction.
Soaring Rate of Half A Million Privately-Owned Cars In Singapore
Despite our highly-efficient public transport infrastructure, there are close to half a million privately owned vehicles in Singapore. Roads take up about 11% of land in Singapore as compared to only 6% for housing and less than 3% for natural forest reserves.
Apart from taking up critically scarce land resources for the building of roads and contributing to decreased air quality, such a staggering number of cars reduces the efficiency of our transport system by taking up road space that is needed by public transport and commercial vehicles.
