The book is full of detailed charts and graphs that examine the greenhouse gasses emitted by a vast array of seemingly innocuous everyday activities and world-changing events. Calculations range from a slight 10 grams for sending a text message or drying your hands to the massive emissions embedded in the World Cup, data centers, and war, all of which weigh in around one million tons. There are some surprises—a paper bag has twice the footprint of a plastic one—and surprisingly nuanced discussions about the 80 grams that go into bananas and many other foods.

Cattle in Japan’s Fukushima prefecture are struggling to survive as radiation leaks from a crippled nuclear power plant contaminate soil and water and force farmers to evacuate the area.
“Farmers must make a very tough decision — running away from their farms to protect themselves or staying there to take care of their livestock,” Kenzo Sasaki, 70, who raises 25 cattle in Irisabara village in Fukushima, said in an interview. “Animals in the evacuation zone are probably dying without food and water as growers in the area have no option but to flee.”

But the goal is not universal veganism, which is pie-in-the-sky; it’s health and sustainability. And we get there by preparing real food, vegan or not. (Remember: Coke, Tostitos and Reese’s Peanut Butter Puffs — yum! — are all vegan.) The answer is not fake animal products, whose advocates argue that they’re transitional to a kinder-to-animal diet. Indeed, that’s good, but a real food diet is better.

Einstein was right – honey bee collapse threatens global food security

Almost a third of global farm output depends on animal pollination, largely by honey bees.
These foods provide 35pc of our calories, most of our minerals, vitamins, and anti-oxidants, and the foundations of gastronomy. Yet the bees are dying – or being killed – at a disturbing pace.
The story of “colony collapse disorder” (CCD) is already well-known to readers of The Daily Telegraph.
Some keep hives at home and have experienced this mystery plague, and doubtless have strong views on whether it is caused by parasites, or a virus, or use of pesticides that play havoc with the nervous system of young bees, or a synergy of destructive forces coming together.

Hospitals are meant to be places of healing, but sometimes just even looking at the food can make you sicker.
It’s time for every hospital—no matter where they are situated, or what communities they serve—to step up and understand that good food can indeed be medicine, and that bad food can impact much more than just your appetite.
