Convenor’s Message
Global Eco 2010 brings together practitioners from around the globe to discuss the opportunities presented by ecotourism. This Asia-Pacific event provides a unique platform for sharing knowledge, highlighting best practice case study examples and outlining new initiatives that will drive the future of ecotourism into the next decade. Importantly the conference also presents the challenges and realities of building an ecotourism business and sector.
In the International Year of Biodiversity there is no better time for players in ecotourism and experiential tourism to contribute to discussions and positive for this vital tourism sector. Achieving a competitive advantage, a crucial part of business, it is essential to keep up with the latest trends, technologies and tools that are available for ecotourism.
Meeting in Noosa on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland provides an outstanding location to provide highly applied and practical examples of nature-based tourism, the greening of the industry and partnerships between tourism and protected area managers.
With an exceptional program featured over four days and an array of extremely valuable networking opportunities, I encourage you to make Global Eco an essential part of your professional development in 2010.

When it comes to travel, it’s actually easy being green.
Just think small.
It may sound simplistic, but it’s the little things a traveler does before, during and sometimes after a trip that add up to an environmentally responsible, low-footprint, guilt-free vacation.
For the seriously green traveler, the process begins way before one boards a plane or sets foot on a cruise ship’s gangplank. Never mind whether an airline has updated its fleet to reduce carbon emissions or a cruise line has a moderern recycling system – destinations are often chosen based on a hotel’s, city’s or even country’s level of committment to sustainable tourism. Here are 10 quick tips for a greener getaway:

Big interventions needed to offset World Cup carbon emissions

With an estimated carbon footprint of 2 753 250 t of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e), the FIFA 2010 World Cup, in South Africa, would have the largest carbon footprint of any major international sporting event, and would need major interventions to achieve the ambition of leaving a positive environmental legacy.
The massive footprint was largely owing to the significant distance that many international spectators would need to travel to get to South Africa. Because of its location, almost all international visitors would need to fly to the country.
In fact, 67% of the carbon footprint (1,86-million tons) was attributed to international travel. However, excluding international travel, the 2010 FIFA World Cup was still more than eight times the size of the 2006 World Cup held in Germany.
